Samford Athletics Hall of Fame: Charlie Owens Induction Video

in 1966 at age 16 Charlie Owens showed his tennis talents on the big stage winning the boys 16 and under Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship the same tournament won by the likes of Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl and Jim Courier at that age Owens born in Tuscaloosa Alabama brought his tennis talents to Samford University in 1972 Owens play won him the NCAA Division two men’s tennis championships becoming the school’s first individual national champion a member of Samford’s class of 1973 Owens then ventured into the professional tennis world he won 56 singles matches including playing his way to the third round of the US Open in 1973 and 74 in March of 75 Owens was ranked a career-high 36 in the world as well as making it to the third round of Wimbledon in doubles tennis Owens won 51 career matches making it to the third round of the US Open three times including an upset win by he and partner Mike Estep over third seeds Arthur Ashe and Roscoe Tanner in 1974 Charlie played professional tennis into the 1980s producing many great memories during his career now he’s a member of the inaugural class of the Samford Athletics Hall of Fame
