How to Catch a Baseball : Charging a Ball in Baseball

Hi! I’m Bill Rogan along with Andy and on
behalf of Expert Village, we’re going to talk a little bit about charging a slow hit baseball.
If it’s a rocket shot, you really don’t have time to charge it, but any ground ball you
want to charge, so you have your momentum going toward the throw, but especially a slow
hit roller you’re going to have charge, scoop, and throw all in one motion. It’s very difficult.
It takes a lot of practice. You should always know how fast the runner is. If it’s a slow
guy, you can take a little bit more time, but if it’s a really fast guy, you’re going
to have to be quick yourself. You don’t want to go so fast where you over run the ball
or make a bad throw. You want to come in, scoop it off your front foot or the left foot.
You want to scoop, come up, and throw. If you can use 2 hands, all the better. Sometimes
when you’re playing third, you may have to feel it bare handed, which is a very difficult
play to make. Andy’s going to hit some here and I’ll try and demonstrate charging the
ball. Ball comes in, scoop, and throw. Get that ball to your hand quick. Slow hit roller,
you charge, 2 hands, come up, throw. Stay low. That’s a slow hit ball.

This is horrible! First of all never teach to field with one hand or just the glove. Two hands always best and field the ball on the glove side ankle… always stay down and rainbow throw to first base to the left side of bag!!! It takes lots of practice but only 4 of 10 players do it right.

@xYOUTUB3jVi3Yes rainbow throw. If you field the ball on your glove side ankle using two hands you will plant your right foot in order to throw off balance. Most inexperience players will come up and throw the ball in the dirt and or take extra steps allowing the runner to gain ground and beat out your throw. If you throw the ball on the second base side which is what i meant by the "left" you will get a semi rainbow throw and have more time to throw the runner out.
