Engineering Research: Sports Engineering

Prof. John McPhee, Canada Research Chair. My research is devoted towards studying the
dynamics and the control of humans who are interacting with mechatronic systems. In the
golf world, we mainly focus on improving the golfer performance by looking at the equipment
design and optimizing it for an individual golfer. As well as developing new training
devices that provide detailed information to the athlete and their coaches. We use the
golf simulator to test out the validity of our computer models for the equipment, the
golf swing, and the biomechanics of the golfer. And secondly, to test out devices
that we’re developing for the golf industry. One of our most exciting areas of research
right now is to develop wearable sensors that go on an athlete and provide real time feedback
as to how they can be improving their performance, without sacrificing safety.
